Build Your Emergency Kit Before You Need It

When disaster strikes, you won’t have time to run to the store. Having an emergency kit ready means your family can focus on safety—not scrambling for supplies.

Ready Rex says: “Don’t get caught unprepared—pack your kit today!” 🦖

Why an Emergency Kit Matters

Clinton County’s top hazards include utility failures, tornadoes, winter storms, hazardous materials, and flooding. Each of these can disrupt power, limit travel, or force families to shelter in place. An emergency kit ensures you have what you need to get through the first hours or days until help arrives or services are restored.

The Basics for Every Kit

Start small and cover essentials. Every kit should include:

  • 💧 Water: At least one gallon per person per day (3-day supply minimum).

  • 🥫 Food: Non-perishable items that don’t need cooking.

  • 🔦 Flashlight & Batteries

  • 📻 Battery-powered or hand-crank radio (to receive emergency alerts if power/internet is down).

  • 🩹 First Aid Kit

Add Personal Items

Think about your family’s unique needs:

  • Prescription medications and medical equipment

  • Baby formula, diapers, or special dietary items

  • Pet food and supplies

  • Glasses, contact lenses, or mobility aids

Don’t Forget Comfort and Safety Items

In stressful situations, comfort matters:

  • Blankets or sleeping bags

  • Extra clothing and sturdy shoes

  • Hygiene items (soap, hand sanitizer, feminine supplies)

  • Games, books, or small toys for kids

Make It Portable

Your kit should be easy to grab quickly. A backpack, plastic tote, or duffel bag works well. Keep one at home, but also consider smaller “go kits” for your car or workplace.

Ready Rex Tip: “An emergency kit isn’t about perfection—it’s about being better prepared than yesterday.”

Take Action This Week

Set aside time with your family to build or update your kit. Add at least one missing item. Even one step makes you more prepared than before.

Preparedness is peace of mind—and it starts with having the right tools ready.
