Heads Up: Storms Possible Sunday Night into Monday Morning

Clinton County is under a low-end severe weather risk for Sunday night into early Monday morning. The main concerns are dangerous lightning, locally heavy rain, isolated flooding, and a low chance of damaging wind.

Threats and Ratings:

Severe Thunderstorms: Marginal Risk

Clinton County is in a Marginal Risk for severe thunderstorms. Marginal means isolated severe storms are possible, but widespread severe weather is not expected.

Damaging Winds: Limited / Rare

The chance of severe wind gusts is up to 15% within 25 miles of our area. Severe wind means wind gusts of 58 mph or higher. If stronger storms develop, a few trees, limbs, or power lines could be knocked down.

Tornado: Very Low / Highly Unlikely

The tornado risk is less than 2% for Clinton County. The main tornado threat appears to be west of Interstate 75. A brief tornado cannot be fully ruled out, but this is not the main concern locally.

Lightning: Likely

Isolated to scattered thunderstorms are expected. Any thunderstorm can produce dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning. If you hear thunder, go indoors.

Heavy Rain and Flash Flooding: Possible / Elevated Concern

Heavy rain may fall in some storms. A flash flood is flooding that develops quickly, often within minutes to a few hours. The greatest concern will be roads, low spots, small streams, and areas that do not drain well. Recent rainfall may cause water to run off faster than normal.

Timing

The main window for thunderstorms in Clinton County is expected to be Sunday evening through early Monday morning.

The severe weather concern is mainly from about 8 PM Sunday to 6 AM Monday.

The heavy rain and flooding concern may last from Sunday night into Monday morning, possibly through the morning commute.

Bottom Line

This does not look like a high-end severe weather event for Clinton County at this time. The most likely issues are lightning, heavy rain, and isolated high water. A few stronger storms could produce damaging wind, but the tornado threat remains very low locally.

Residents should have more than one way to receive weather warnings, especially overnight.

Forecasts can change as new information becomes available. Clinton County EMA will continue to monitor updates from the National Weather Service, but residents should stay weather aware and have more than one way to receive warnings, especially during the overnight hours.
