Sheltering Class Coming to Clinton County — Get on the Notify List

If you’ve ever wondered what it really looks like when a shelter opens during a disaster, this is your chance to learn it the right way — from the people who do it for real.

Clinton County EMA is currently working with the American Red Cross (ARC) to bring a Sheltering Class to Wilmington. This training is designed for volunteers who may be asked to support shelter operations during major incidents such as tornadoes, severe winter storms, widespread power outages, or other large-scale events that displace residents.

When a date is secured, a link will be sent out for sign-up, so make sure Susan has your info!

Right now, we are waiting on final scheduling confirmation from ARC, but we have requested one of the following dates for a morning class in Wilmington:

  • Saturday, 21 March 2026

  • Saturday, 28 March 2026

  • Saturday, 04 April 2026

This is planned as a one-and-done class, not a recurring course. If you’ve been thinking about sheltering support, grab this training while it’s available — we may not get another local session for a long time.

Because we are still in the planning phase, we are currently collecting tentative interest numbers. This helps us confirm space needs, staffing support, and whether we need to run more than one session.

If you want to be notified once the date is officially confirmed, please reach out to: Susan Hertzmann📧 hertzmann.susan@clintoncountyohio.us

What to Expect

This training is intended to be practical, useful, and volunteer-friendly. If you’re new to sheltering, it will give you a solid foundation. If you’ve helped before, it will help tighten up your skills and understanding of how ARC sheltering works.

Also, fair warning: Tom will do his darndest to give you diabetes via donuts. 🍩

More details will follow once ARC confirms the final schedule. Until then, if you’re even thinking about helping in shelter operations during a disaster — get your name on the list.
